I know what you are thinking…
400+ views on your first day of blogging? Bull crap!
I started this blog after looking up ways to make extra money from home. I was up at 2 AM a few days ago (Yes, I am that new!) with my 8 month old daughter, who thinks sleep is for the weak! After a lot of research I decided that I was going to give this blogging thing a whirl. I stayed up for hours researching exactly how to start a blog.
The next morning I was armed with my diploma from Google University in blogging! I decided that I was going to do the free WordPress blog to start with. (Terrible freaking idea. I will go into that later.)
After about six hours of getting my page up and running, I posted my first blog, and within 24 hours I had over 270 views. At this point I decided that I could really do this, and needed to get my own hosting/domain name ASAP. I thought it would be simple to move my blog and viewers over to my self hosted site. NOPE! (Told you I was a newbie!) I lost everything, and had to start from scratch. So please get self hosted! You can get a site for $27 here. Do it. You will thank me later.
Before I go into exactly what I did to get those viewers, you need to know that I am not in any way tech savvy. I had no flipping idea what I was doing. Also I got into this to make money, and I was willing to work hard to make that happen.
GETTING STARTED Now its time to write your blog. Keep in mind you are wanting someone to read this, and want to come back. So make it interesting and original. You will hear this over and over, but content is important. The internet is flooded with bloggers, and you need to stand OUT! Once my blog was up and published, the hard work started. PROMOTE. PROMOTE. PROMOTE. This is the single most important thing you can do. Some people will tell you it takes time to get viewers, to just be patient. I wholeheartedly disagree with that. Any business owner knows you need to promote your product, and blogging is no different. I started out on Facebook. I went into every Facebook group I could find that related to my niche. Once you have joined the groups, post your blog. A LOT! Just to give you an estimate, I think that I posted my blog 20+ times, or so, and about 1/3 of my views came from Facebook groups. The next way I promoted was on pinterest. I am so not an expert on this particular type of promoting, and I only got a couple of views from it. So I wouldn’t spend too much time on it, until you get the hang of your blog. So the next way I promoted was really what I feel like gave me super high views my first day. REDDIT Someone suggested that I try posting my blog there, and it completely took off. My niche is ‘mommy blogs’, and my first published post was about csections. So I joined three subreddits that related to that. I really feel like it’s better to make your post sound like you are asking a question. It allows readers to either agree or disagree with you. For instance, with my csection blog I asked “Do you think C-sections are easier, than natural birth?” Also the cool thing about Reddit is that in order for someone to answer your question, they have to click your link!! (Awesome, right?) If you want page views, you NEED to post on REDDIT!
Another way of promoting your site, is going to other popular blogs in your niche. Make sure you leave a comment along with a link to your site. This is a really good way to keep getting views.
Getting views is hard work, and writing the blog is only the half of it. You are really going to have to want it. If you want to check out the post that got 400+ views click here.
I know starting a blog can be overwhelming, but if you follow some of these basic steps you can totally be succesful, too! If anyone is interested in following along with my blog, I will be doing an update on how my site is doing in 30 days. I know I have a lot to learn, but I am really excited to see where this goes. Feel free to comment any questions or advice. I am always here to help, like so many people did for me.
